My school is a leading Expeditionary Learning charter school, focused on preparing students for lifelong learning. The 48 seventh graders I teach are passionate about learning and being active beyond the core academics. When given the opportunity to create and manage their own business, they were enthusiastic and ecstatic. On their own, they have begun selling breakfast items and school supplies to the school in the morning, designing the business from the ground up. They are developing their own business organization model, name, logo, and advertising. They are also giving up their free time, like recess, to meet and make decisions about inventory, prices, employee schedules, and money management. All of the money raised will go towards supporting their end of year experience: 4 days canoeing, camping, and providing service.
