Mohave Accelerated Learning Center students attend a small charter high school in Arizona. Our high school consists of approximately 225 students, with 67% receiving a free or reduced lunch. Our students struggle to have the materials they need to be successful in school. Although they struggle financially, most of our students are eager to learn and create a better life for themselves through education. The loudest, most common complaint teachers hear about reading is that students don't understand the language of a novel because it is so old. I have found in my 10 years of teaching that any opportunity I can create for my students to read a modern novel usually results in students enjoying the reading and writing assignments that accompany the book. Our class sizes can range from 10 to 28 students. Academically, Mohave Accelerated has a very diverse student population with some taking dual enrollment and honors classes while others are in resource and enrichment classes.
