Community is such an integral part of our school. By giving all the students access to the same book, all kids are on an equal playing field. They can talk and laugh about what's going on in the book. It's not unusual to see a first grader interacting with an older student discussing their favorite part or using a new word they learned. The bond these books create last throughout their years in elementary school. One School, One Book promotes robust vocabulary, accountable talk and creates connections between classrooms, kids and staff. Students gain access to new rich vocabulary and 'sayings' from the book that will be displayed around the school. We provide visuals for all the new vocabulary to help students own these new words. Their faces light up when they recognize a new word and are able to use it properly in conversation. By donating to our project, you will not only help to improve and increase student engagement, you will ultimately help to increase their academic achievement.
