It continuously amazes me how these students, despite all of the challenges and hardships that they are faced with, consistently show up. The student population is quite diverse as the school is home to students of African American descent, those from the Dominican Republic, Puerto Ricans, and many other countries. Living in the poorest Congressional district in the nation definitely poses some major obstacles. Over the past several years, our school has went through a transformation. Aside from supporting them academically, all personnel throughout the school take on roles outside of their specific job titles. A teacher such as myself is not solely a teacher. I serve as a role model, confidant, coach, support mechanism, and counselor. Throughout the school, we strive to make our students better learners so that they can succeed, both within the walls of our school, as well as outside in the "real world."
