At the beginning of each school year, I meet around 75 new 12-13 year olds who I will get to spend the year with. They walk into my classroom and see a diverse library, book posters on the walls, quotes about reading, and they quickly find out how important independent reading is in our class. By the end of the year, almost all of my students say that they read more during 7th grade than they have any other year because of the emphasis on choice and independent reading in my class. This year will look different. As my district starts the school year virtually, students will not get the opportunity to peruse my library, do book “speed dating” (every 7th grader’s favorite), and check-out the books that they want from my classroom. Because of this, I want to provide each of them with a book that they can have at home, read, and keep. I think we can all agree that reading an ebook from a Chromebook screen just isn’t the same experience as holding a book in your hands. Please help me gift my students with highly engaging books that they can read from home! All kids deserve to have highly engaging and relevant books to read.
