I teach 6th grade in a middle school with almost 50% low-income students. Many of my students have not been exposed to many books at home, nor have they been read to regularly. They haven't yet found the joy of reading, and my goal each year is to make reading come alive for them. \r\n\r\nI choose books that have high interest, as well as authors that students gravitate to. Once the book is in their hands, I give them time in class to read. What was missing in my classroom were cozy places to curl up with a book. My project requested some folding camp chairs for the students to sit in and read. \r\n\r\nThanks to your generosity, I received 5 folding chairs. My students were thrilled and began using them immediately. The only problem now is making sure there is a rotation in place so all students have an opportunity to use the new seating. \r\n\r\nThe students were also touched by the fact that someone outside of our school cared enough to donate to our classroom and help us enjoy reading even more. It felt wonderful to know someone cared. Thank you for being that someone.","fullyFundedDate":1758131377793,"projectUrl":"project/curl-up-with-a-good-book/9557203/","projectTitle":"Curl Up With a Good Book","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Bauman","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-9_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8510176"},{"teacherId":8510176,"projectId":9313648,"letterContent":"I teach ELA to 90 6th-grade students. The biggest challenge is finding novels that they love, can not put down, and look forward to reading each day. When I read the novel, The War That Saved My Life, I knew it would be the perfect book for my class. \r\n\r\nIn past years, I have read this book as a read-aloud to my class, but I wanted it to have a greater impact on my students. I wanted the book in their hands so that they could have ownership of reading themselves. The problem was that I didn't have a budget to buy any new novels. When I found Donors Choose, I took a chance in hopes of having 35 novels donated to my class. \r\n\r\nThankfully, my project was funded, and 35 novels were delivered to my classroom! My students were elated! They knew how much I loved this book and were looking forward to reading it along with me. Each day, the students would open their novel, and we would take turns reading through the chapters. \r\n\r\nThe students were immediately hooked! We read with excitement through the chapters, and it was so gratifying to see them immersed in reading. We had rich discussions about the plot taking place during WWII. The students had so many connections to make! We discussed the many themes of the book, such as empathy, perseverance, and courage. The characters in the novel led us through many emotions, from despair to elation. \r\n\r\nI am sure reading this novel together will be a highlight of their 6th-grade year. I hope that it also provided a boost for their love of reading!","fullyFundedDate":1746819501726,"projectUrl":"project/for-the-love-of-reading/9313648/","projectTitle":"For The Love Of reading!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Bauman","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-9_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8510176"},{"teacherId":9487750,"projectId":8726139,"letterContent":"Thank you for your generosity in supporting my request for materials. It provided the students in my classroom access to high quality vertical whiteboards to use when collaborating in math class. \r\n\r\nWhen I first set them up and the students entered the room, they were excited and eager to use them. When we got started with the activity, they were busy talking and writing their thoughts on the boards. Every student was alert and active in thinking about the math problems. It was easy for me to observe each group's work since it was vertical and I was able to provide support to those that needed it at just the right time. Students continue to use the boards during structured activities as well as during independent work time. Your contribution has made a significant impact on our efforts to engage and inspire low readers, helping them build confidence and foster a love for reading.\r\n\r\nGraphic novels have proven to be an invaluable tool in capturing the interest of students who might otherwise struggle with traditional texts. By providing visually rich, high-interest stories, you've opened up a new world of possibilities for these young readers. These books offer more than just entertainment—they help improve literacy skills, promote critical thinking, and encourage a sense of belonging in the classroom.\r\n\r\nThanks to your thoughtful donation, we are now able to offer a diverse range of books that cater to a variety of reading levels and interests. Students who were once reluctant to pick up a book are now excited to dive into their new graphic novels, and many are making great strides in their reading development. It is inspiring to see how these books are igniting their imaginations and fostering a sense of pride in their reading accomplishments.\r\n\r\nYour support plays a crucial role in helping us create an environment where every student feels empowered and capable of success. We are incredibly fortunate to have donors like you who believe in the importance of education and are willing to invest in the future of our students.\r\n\r\nOnce again, thank you for your generosity and commitment to making a difference in the lives of our young learners.
