Experimenting with electricity can be fun and exciting when performed in a controlled environment. The ability to demonstrate these forces in a controlled environment and contingent upon materials used in the experiment. Experiencing science first hand is far superior to watching videos and filling out worksheets. The Van de Graaff Generator is a perfect way to demonstrate static charge, static discharge (lightning), opposite charges attract, like charges repel, and completion of a circuit. Students will benefit from seeing these charges in real-time with this guided, hands-on experiment. The plasma ball is an excellent hands-on demonstration of an electric field and completing a circuit. I use the same light bulbs found throughout the school to accompany this experiment. Students are able to see and safely feel how the electric current flows through conductors and completes a circuit.
