All of my art students enjoy the act of painting. It is when the act of painting is given a purpose that the student finds meaning in their work. I find it enjoyable to explore different art media by first completing some form of tutorial. This allows me to better learn how to use my materials before delving into the creative process. Chinese Calligraphy is one art form that lends itself completely to a tutorial style of learning that can move into a creative form of expression.
Chinese brush painting is a wonderful way to teach the middle school aged child not only an art technique, but a calming discipline. The bamboo brushes that are used allow for the soft edged lines that seem to just happen when one follows the Chinese brush painting technique. Students learn ancient art forms and history combine with a discipline in fine motor skills and critical thinking. There are many different art forms that employ the bamboo brush including, but not limited to, Calligraphy, Sumi-E Painting, and Ceramic Glazing. These brush sets would enable me to enhance and enrich my current art classes.
