My school is an urban school in the western part of our southern state. We are a very diverse student body of approximately 845 students from 5 or more countries at any one time. My students are excited to learn, especially when it is relevant material and enjoy challenging issues and problems. They particularly enjoy learning about events that have impacted the world. They crave global information and experiences and the majority of my students will be attending college as first generation college students. This is the case because the poverty level and single parent family percentages are very high in our small town. It is understandable then that many of my students have come from homes where education is not the priority and so are at risk for success in literacy based areas. It is a paramount focus to encourage literacy and have students carry that skill forward, as well as share it with younger siblings.
