I teach in a public school in south Florida. My classroom is a bit different from the norm. I am a teacher with 9 wonderful autistic students. My students are 3rd, 4th and 5th graders who are excited and motivated to try and create new things. In my classroom, not only do I focus on the academic side of school, but I also focus on the practical and social side as well. Children with autism often have difficulties in motor coordination, engage in repetitive behaviors, have language disabilities and social communication deficits. In my classroom, every Friday afternoon we have "Sensory Skills" time. It can range from painting, working with playdough, working with shaving cream on a desk and even a mini cooking class. I've found that my students open up when they are given the chance to be kids. They love getting a bit messy with shaving cream on their hands and love the delicious snacks that we make. However, it is becoming harder for me to afford to buy all of these things for my students to enjoy.
