My students are all seniors either in my English or AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) class. Most speak English as a second language, come from low income homes, and will be first in their family to attend college. Our school is a Title 1 funded school, indicating that most students are at or below the poverty line. Most are first in their family to attend college. In my class, we draft and revise essays and applications for college. We also research and complete scholarship essays and applications. Many college and scholarship applications request hard copies of documents to be mailed and/or scanned and emailed. Without a classroom printer, scanner, fax, my students cannot complete many of the applications they locate. Having this access in my classroom ensures they will have this opportunity as well as allow me to check their applications for accuracy before submitting. This tool would allow more students to complete applications and meet deadlines.
