As the first music teacher in our newly opened site, there were no instruments starting out the new school year. For the majority of our students, this is also the first year attending school in person. Compared to their first week, they have made wonderful progress learning the music classroom routines and structure. Many are able to use the egg shakers, wrist bells, and a couple of woodblocks, maracas, and sand blocks. However, it is difficult to teach whole group music lessons without a set of instruments for all the students to be able to access in one class. Instruments that are accessible are essential for student learning, participation, and growth. The ukulele set would be an amazing introduction to learning music theory for my 3-5 grade class. The xylophone set is color-coded to give independence for our students when playing music pieces. The keys can also be removed to limit the number of notes offered. The rhythm sticks would be an accessible way to teach rhythm, counting, auditory discrimination, and recognition of patterns. Many of the skills that will be practiced with these instruments will transfer over to their academic development in the classroom. For example, the rhythm sticks would aid in the development of auditory skills, fine motor skills, body awareness, and coordination of mind and body.
