My students attend an urban public school and many are unfamiliar and uncomfortable with natural settings. Last year we did some basic composting to study the organic life cycle including decomposition and we also did some preliminary planting. Both were, for many, an introduction to dirt and the organisms which call dirt home. I take advantage of every opportunity to get my students hands on the science and have them see, smell, and touch the earth.
