My kindergarteners attend a small, very rural school in Pennsylvania. Most are from low income families who are unable to give their children many of the experiences that are so important to understand and enjoy our world. Many of the parents of my students are uneducated themselves. The Wii and DS are usually used in place of quality interaction amongst family members. In our school district, cuts are being made and my students will be combined with the other half of kindergarten. As the sole teacher for this grade level, I feel it is even more important to offer learners a variety of activities that promote learning and appeal to different modalities. Many students at this age, even though they do pick up on information quickly, are unaccustomed to the general learning that takes place in school. They need fun and interesting ways to promote their fluency and creativity and engage them in learning.
