Our third grade team has created an ELA rotation for our scholars. Each teacher has taken a section of our reading and writing curriculum and become the expert in that area to provide the best learning experience for every third grade student in our building. My section of college prep studio will have scholars diving deep into a loved novel while they obtain all the critical reading skills they will need for the rest of their educational journey. We will use Edward Tulane to explicitly teach them how to think within the text, beyond the text and about the text. Putting a copy of this novel in each child's hands will give them the power to take ownership of the literature we are sharing. They will be using the skills of visualizing, making inferences, questioning, making connections, determining importance, synthesizing, determining theme and studying character development.
