Up until two years ago we had an experienced writing teacher who developed writing lessons for all students and who gave additional support to struggling writers. Due to our town's budget crisis this position was eliminated along with additional resources needed to teach writing effectively. Our students live in a suburban neighborhood. However, the community does not support the education budget year after year. Our students have important stories to tell and are encouraged to write in their writer's notebooks daily but without mentor texts and other needed supplies, they are missing the inspiration needed to grow as writers. My students are struggling with the writing process. Their weaknesses are writing organized stories with strong elaboration. Many of these children do not understand how to add specific details into their writing and they are not able to expand on plot events. Students need support in applying the 7 traits to their writing.
