My students are a wonderful, sweet, and thoughtful group of 5 year olds! Our elementary school is a Title 1 school that falls well below state and national poverty indicators: it exceeds the state average for free and reduced priced lunch recipients by over 15% and exceeds the national average by 22%. Children in may class often come to school without proper nourishment, yet are eager to learn and appreciate any thoughtfulness extended to them. Unemployment is high in this district, and good paying jobs are few. Our class is a true melting pot of ethnic diversity: over 50% are of Asian decent, 30% Hawaiian, and Whites and Hispanics make up the rest. This year I have one student who has migrated from the Marshall Islands and speaks no English. Other students come from homes where English is not the primary language.
