My 8th grade students are from an area of a major city that has been hit very hard by budget cuts. Basically, there's no more money for class supplies. The neighborhood is predominantly working class, lower income families and parents can't afford to give to the school. The majority of my students are second language learners whose parents immigrated from a variety of different countries including Mexico, Latin America, Vietnam, Africa and Cambodia to name a few. Many of these students have limited opportunities to apply technology to enhance learning in a meaningful way. Many of them feel distanced from the community at large and do not have the confidence to build a bridge of communication between professionals and themselves, thus perpetuating a self-fulfilling destiny of lowered expectations. Many of these students lack support at home for a quality education so it is only at school that they will get real opportunities.
