These students are motivated to graduate and know that having an education is important in being successful in life. They also want to have fun and learn about things that interest them. They always try their best and are respectful for the most part. These students vary in ability. They have different goals ranging from communicating with a voice output device because they are not able to speak, to students who need specific help with reading comprehension, to students who need help with social skills. The students are not only diverse in what they are working on, but they are culturally diverse. The majority of my students live in homes where English is not the primary language. For a long time, speech services in the high school was minimal, therefore, the materials in the speech room were essentially non-existent. Now that more students are staying on for services longer, they need materials that are geared specifically for them.
