Our school has 79% of students live in economic hardship (compared to a statewide average of 47%) while 59% of students identify primarily as being of Native Hawaiian ancestry. 14% of students at the school have been identified as homeless or residing in emergency or transitional housing. Our classroom 'ohana (family) is an special education resource room where students with differing academic abilities can improve their skills. Students understand that high expectations have been set for their learning and behavior and they contribute by setting their own goals for learning. The town has a public library, but safe travel to this space is not always an option for our families. Students love to read and use technology. They desire opportunities to practice and strengthen ho'ihi/respect and kuleana/responsibility.
