My students are by and large the kind of students many people think of when they hear the term "inner-city school." Many of them live well below the poverty line and have parents who work two or three jobs to make ends meet. They have the analytical and critical thinking skills that are necessary for success, but often not the technical skills to express themselves as they should. Most students do not own any books. Most students are pulled by the conflicting desires to change the course of their family by advancing to college, and the very real need to work and help put food on the table.
