One of my favorite moments has been watching students who sometimes struggle to sit still during reading become completely absorbed in a story once they are comfortable in the new space. The tissues are something we reach for every single day, especially as we head into allergy and cold season. The snacks have also been a wonderful addition. Sometimes students come to class hungry or simply need a little extra fuel to help them focus and finish their work. Having snacks readily available means we can meet that need quickly and get back to learning.\r\n\r\nMy students were so excited when they saw the new supplies arrive! They love knowing that people outside of our school cared enough about them to help make sure our classroom has what we need. Even items that may seem small, like a snack or a box of tissues, can have a big impact on a child's school day. These resources help me create an environment where students can focus on their learning instead of worrying about an empty stomach or not having something they need.\r\n\r\nAs we continue through the school year, my students will be working hard toward their individual learning goals while building confidence and independence in the classroom. These essentials will support us along the way by keeping our classroom stocked and helping students feel cared for and prepared to learn. My third graders love gathering together for story time, and the new books have given us opportunities to laugh, make predictions, ask questions, and have meaningful conversations. Reading in our classroom is an interactive experience—we stop to discuss characters, make connections, learn new vocabulary, and think about what the author is trying to teach us. Even students who may be hesitant to read independently are eager to listen, participate, and share their ideas during our read-alouds.\r\n\r\nThe books have also become valuable teaching tools across our curriculum. The True Story of the Three Little Pigs will help us explore point of view, while Enemy Pie will encourage students to identify theme and think about how characters change. For our biography unit, The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, Emmanuel's Dream, and The Girl Who Thought in Pictures will introduce students to inspiring people who demonstrated perseverance, creativity, and determination. The Legend of Rock Paper Scissors has made our folktale and mythology lessons especially fun and memorable. These books have given my students more opportunities to find stories that interest them while practicing the reading skills we work on every day. Because my students are developing readers with a wide range of ability levels, having books they can successfully read and enjoy is so important. We use these texts to practice skills such as sight word recognition, decoding unfamiliar words, reading fluently, building vocabulary, and answering comprehension questions.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is all about building confidence and helping students see themselves as readers. Students have opportunities to choose books that interest them, read independently, read with support, and practice skills using texts at an appropriate level. One of the biggest benefits of adding these books has been simply having more choices available. When students are excited about what they are reading, they are much more willing to pick up a book, practice, and keep trying when reading becomes difficult.\r\n\r\nIt has been so exciting to watch students explore the new books and find ones they genuinely want to read.
