My students need a digital camera and a tripod.

My Students

Have you ever seen a room full of 20 eighth graders become instantly engaged in a lesson during the last period of the day on a Friday afternoon? I have! We were watching a video on the Pythagorean Theorem and immediately I had their attention!

My students are beautiful, smart and creative!

However, I have too many students who are not engaged daily in learning. My school is set in an urban setting right outside of the St. Louis, Missouri city limits. We are a public middle school (6th-8th grade), 91% African American, 60% free and reduced lunch and full of future leaders of America. I have 2 classes that are taking Algebra and 4 classes that are taking Pre-Algebra. Each class meets for two 90 minute class periods and one 40 minute class period each week. I have students that are in the band, students who are athletes, students who are on the dance team, students who are on the robotics team, students who go home and take care of siblings and even a student who is trying to run her own baking business. I have students who grew up watching videos and now have instant Internet access with nooks, tablets, laptops, smart phones, iPads and even the old fashioned computer. I teach non-traditional students.

My Project

We have an 11 year old that frequently says, "Hey, look at this video." or "Do we have any wire, I found this cool thing on-line and I want to build it." In understanding a middle school student and their fascination with the Internet, I wondered how do I better use this technology in my classroom. If we had a video camera in the classroom we could video lessons and put the lessons on the class website for students who are absent or need additional time. "I can watch the video over and over and I don't have to keep asking the teacher questions." This statement came from a student after a homework assignment where they had to watch a video on the Pythagorean Theorem. If I had a video camera in my classroom I could allow students to create videos to model what they learned, summarize their learning in their own words and then share the learning with others. When students are watching videos in class they are instantly engaged and when they are engaged they are learning.

It is important that kids are engaged in learning.

It is important that students can learn in a variety of ways. It is important for students to share what they have learned with others. Being able to video classroom lessons and allowing students to video and share their learning will allow students to learn in another manner and help to meet the needs of all of the different learning styles that kids have.
