This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Music is a universal language with the power to change lives. Our current economic climate challenges us in providing for the diverse needs of a program in size and caliber as the one at our school. Instrumental music is one of the few elective programs offered for nearly 300 students.

Our school serves nearly 1600 students; approximately 300 of those are involved in the instrumental music program.

Many of these students begin playing instruments in their 6th grade year, having little to no musical experience and continue on well into their high school years. It has been my experience that music has given many of them a reason to do well in school. The skills and discipline they receive from being involved in music prepares them to be 21st century learners and people.

My Project

We are in dire need a sound mixer. One of the highlights of the year for our school is the annual outdoor concert. A tradition that was started five years ago, this concert features an evening of music under the stars. Every year the concert and the crowd get bigger and better. This year we are looking at ways of improving the quality of our sound system and will begin with the mixer. Our current mixer dates back to the early 60's, has broken knobs and is very outdated. We need something a bit more up to date and easy to use. Having a modern mixer will allow me to teach students the basic skills involved in live sound.

Our current economic climate is making more and more difficult for schools to have instrumental music programs, let alone provide for their many diverse needs.

The majority of the money we acquire through fundraising goes towards the purchase of supplies and instrument repairs. This new mixer will allow students to continue to experience successful performances in front of large audiences and improve the quality of sound in the performances.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
