This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Write about the challenges you have overcome in high school that have made you who you are now"... This prompt is probably one of the most difficult prompts that students encounter in high school.

My students are in the academic middle.

They have GPAs ranging between 2.5 and 3.5, will be the first to go to college in their families, and are determined to succeed. They are most often the kids that do not know where or how to start their journey to college, and they depend on me to show them the way. They speak at least 2 languages fluently and all have fascinating life stories. Sometimes, they lose focus of their dreams, but then, they refocus on becoming successful in high school, college and beyond. I am the lucky person that gets to accompany them on this 4 year journey.

My Project

We all remember that infamous, daunting college entrance essay prompt that dares us to spill our life story on paper. Colleges want to know the most personal details of our most intimate stories. How does one go about answering such a difficult, gut-wrenching question? My answer is this: have students start to journal early on in their high school years so that they are prepared with journal entry after journal entry of intimate, juicy life details. Students will be able to document difficult times in their lives and then use these pages to help them answer the personal statement prompt. In addition, this journal will act as a tool for the students to communicate personal questions to me that they might be too embarrassed to talk about. I will respond to them in these journals, with the hope of getting to know my students on a very personal level.

Notebooks for my AVID students will give my students a space to document both mundane and momentous events in their life, helping them to compile story after story of usable information that will hopefully help them create a memorable personal statement for college.

It will also give me a space to "be there" for my students as well as help me get to know my students on a more personal level.
