My students need 22 sets of window markers and one set of bright window paint to showcase their understanding of math and literature on the windows of our classroom.
Earlier this year, my students took a mini field trip down the hall to admire window art created by a math class. Students had worked together to create colorful mathematical concept maps on the windows of their room, and the spectacular results just glowed. Words and pictures brought math to life!
My urban middle school students, many of them English language learners, are warm, thoughtful, and caring teens.
They begin the year reading years below grade level. We work hard in our mixed grade Language Arts class, reading and writing every day, to strengthen literacy and build the skills needed for success in high school and beyond.
I also teach one math class for students with very limited English proficiency. These students work hard to build basic English communication skills as they master grade level math content.
My Project
The window art we admired in another classroom was so impressive! The window displays they created were mathematically sound and the entire display added a beautiful and unique decorative element to the classroom.
I am requesting 22 sets of window markers and a single set of window paint so that my students can use the windows in our classroom to display their understanding of content. I imagine my students creating character webs from our reading of Shakespeare's "Macbeth" and illustrating annotated versions of Shelley's poem "Ozymandias."
They might demonstrate their understanding of the connections between poems or they might create a colorful display showing four different ways to solve a proportion problem.
There are so many ways to use these colorful window markers in our class.
No matter how many ideas I have, my students will come up with still more! Please help my students show what they know about reading, writing, and math in a new and engaging way using color and graphic design. Thank you.
