Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
There is no denying that people are having a significant impact on the natural environment. Second graders are at an age where they still see the world in a very concrete way. It is extremely difficult for them to grasp the effect that we have on our environment. Wild About the Environment can help!
I teach second grade bilingual at a public Title I elementary school.
All of my students are considered "at risk" because they are economically disadvantaged and they speak a language other than English at home. However, I personally do not consider them "at risk." I have very high expectations for ALL of my students.
I believe with the right kind of motivation and instruction they have the ability to be very successful. The main problem that my children have is the lack of life experiences that would expand their education. I believe that Wild About the Environment would offer opportunities to close that gap.
My Project
The goal of this program is to provide the students with hands-on scientific tools, Reducing, Reusing and Recycling games, life cycle models and themed books designed to heighten environmental awareness. Scientific research indicates that children who use hands-on science are generally more interested in science and have a better understanding of the nature of science than students who use just textbooks.
Engaging students in inquiry can provide a powerful learning experience where students not only learn about science content, but also gain reasoning and research skills. As reasoning and research skills improve, so too will reading abilities and social studies skills.
Humans treat animals and natural resources as if they will always be plentiful, but the truth is that nothing lasts forever.
It is extremely important that we do our best to preserve what we can so future life can exist.
Environmental education programs can potentially reach a wider audience than the student population through the process of intergenerational influence. Wild About the Environment will encourage students to discuss environmental issues and actions with their friends and family.
