Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember hatching chicks in your classroom as a child? Living in a suburban area, my students have little exposure to raising animals. This project will allow my students to experience life cycles first-hand by observing the process of incubating eggs and seeing how chicks develop.

I teach a class of 25 second graders who are eager to learn and love to touch and explore new things.

They were very excited when I brought in a hermit crab as our class pet. Can you imagine their excitement when they see a bunch of chicks hatch out of eggs? More than 80% of our student population come from economically disadvantaged homes and qualify for free or reduced lunches. Almost half of my class is made up of English Learners.

My Project

My second graders are a lively bunch of students who really enjoy experiencing science through hands-on activities rather than just reading about it. What better way is there to learn about life cycles than to experience it first-hand by incubating, hatching, and raising baby chicks in their own classroom? This incubator and brooder kit will allow my students to study the sequential life cycle of the chicken in real-life instead of just through pictures and books. It will also help teach them how to properly feed and care for these animals.

Hatching chicks in the classroom is an exciting project that my students will remember for their life time.

One of the California science standards for second grade is understanding that plants and animals have predictable life cycles and this project will allow my students to see that first-hand! Not only will it benefit my current class but also my future students as well!
