My Students

How important was the library to your life when growing up? Do you remember the excitement of being the first to check out a new book? Funding cuts are keeping this from happening in our school library. Help is needed.

Our students come from an area of mixed economic and racial backgrounds.

The majority are enrolled in the free and reduced lunch program. Having a book to call their own is a luxury that can be given to our students by the school library, if only for a two week loan. However, funding has been cut and there is no money to purchase new books.

My Project

The list of twenty books requested are from Oklahoma's master lists for the Sequoyah Book Awards for Children and Intermediates. These are a necessary addition to the school library for current literature studies. In addition to that, our book club members will read and compete with other middle schools next spring. These books are the materials used in that competition. Without them, the book club will not be able to compete.

Middle school students who want to read should be given every opportunity to do so.

New, high quality literature keeps them motivated and helps them to absorb the elements of literature.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
