Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

What did my students eat from the school cafeteria last Friday? An Uncrustable (high fructose corn syrup, partially hydrogenated soybean oil), cherry pie, chocolate milk, and carrots with ranch dressing. They had no choice to choose other foods.

I teach fourth grade in a rural, low-income area of Northern California.

We are considered a Title I school as the vast majority of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch. We also have a high percentage of ESL (English as a Second Language) students.

My Project

With such a high population of students who eat cafeteria lunch, it is absolutely essential to me that my students, when given the opportunity, will choose healthy foods to consume. I can't expect this if they don't know what "healthy" looks like. I am asking for a collection of books about nutrition, various foods, the food pyramid, and food sources that will help educate my students to make healthy food choices. Each book I have selected can be used in conjunction with our school's reading program and is written at an age-appropriate level.

Your donation will help ensure that my students have the resources they need to make conscious diet choices.
