This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you know what it's like to try to get that word that is on the tip of your tongue, but won't seem to come out? Do you know what it's like to use the same word over and over again in the same paragraph because you don't know how else to describe something? My students know exactly the feeling.
My students are mostly Hispanic, ninth graders from poor gang-infested neighborhoods, and are enrolled in special education courses.
I am their resource teacher, and I also teach their English and math classes. The high school we are at is going through massive budget cuts, and will not be able to provide us with the materials that my students need to get through their special education English class.
My Project
My students struggle incredibly with reading. As high school freshman, some of them can't read the first line of a textbook. The others can read, but have very poor comprehension skills. In order to understand what a passage is trying to convey, a student needs background knowledge and a good vocabulary, neither of which my students have.
I have taught them a strategy using the thesaurus to build their vocabulary; however there are not enough thesauruses to go around. We will be able to use them in everyday reading. My students will be prompted to use the thesaurus each time they write. What a valuable tool!
A thesaurus is a tool that everybody needs to learn how to use!
It will be especially useful for my special education students to increase their vocabulary skills and aid them in their understanding of what they read. Please help us obtain them!
