My Students

Middle school is a difficult time. It would be hard to find an adult that would like to repeat their time as a seventh grader! Students struggle with body issues and self esteem all through middle school.

I teach a group of about 180 fantastic seventh graders (students with and without disabilities) near a military base.

Our community is evenly split between families that serve the United States in the Armed Forces and families that have lived here for generations. A large portion of our families face generational poverty. With few resources, our school tries to meet the academic and emotional needs of this diverse group of students.

My Project

Our unit strives to allow students to take a look at what society thinks is beautiful. We will evaluate that idea and look at ourselves to find what is wonderful about each student. Working within this over-arching theme, we will be working to deepen our understanding of fiction elements using "The Uglies"- a novel about a society that resorts to extreme plastic surgery in order to attain beauty.

It is important to us that our students have a mix of modern and classical literature in the classroom.

Unfortunately, our funding does not allow us to keep up with modern novels that will inspire critical thought about real-world issues. This class set of novels will not only serve my 150-180 students, but can also be used by our other 7th grade Language Arts teacher to serve her team.
