You would be surprised by not only how many 7th grade students are not fluent readers, but also by how few disfluent students can hear that they are not reading fluently. Having students listen to themselves read is essential to helping them to learn to develop fluent reading skills. Headphones and Whisper Phones will help students hear what they can't hear in their heads- Their own voice! Students that can hear themselves read are more likely to recognize how they can use their voices to show meaning in a text. Taking our middle school students back to basic practices to recognize fluent reading will help our reading comprehension to improve.
