This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

What better way for children to see details in literature than by learning to see and draw the world around them? As an adult, we recognize details and summarize them in a glance. But young children who especially have limited life experiences need a lot of opportunities to develop these skills.

Our school is located in a lower socio-economic area and the majority of our students are second language learners.

Most of these students have had little or no exposure to the visual arts. However, our first graders come alive with any opportunity to create art projects. They love to draw, and using this medium is a way for them to successfully show what they see and know.

My Project

The drawing materials we are are requesting will allow us to teach students techniques artists use to create texture, form, space, and proportion. These elements are the "details" that distinguish one subject from another. By teaching students how to create these art elements in drawing, we hope to sharpen their ability to see the details that make up the whole. This skill is important in all aspects of learning and is also the most difficult to teach. Students who can observe the small details in a book's illustrations or words of a book will experience a story and a higher level. Through drawing instruction, students will have the opportunity to observe objects closely and use techniques that will allow them to draw what they see. Students' art experience will also be complimented by looking at art works and learning how to discuss the artist's work by using the visual arts standards.

We know that students do not all learn the same way.

By including art instruction into our first grade curriculum, we will be giving students a different way to learn how to observe details in a subject. The materials are for pencils with a wide variety of hardness to vary the darkness and width of lines. The blending sticks and erasers will be used to show shading to create form, and sharpeners are needed to support their work.
