My students have quite an appetite for learning but because they live in a lower socio-economic area and many parents do not speak English they are starving for educational and creative opportunities. Games are a fantastic way for them to learn valuable social skills and have fun learning as well. The first time I passed out a deck of cards and showed them a few math games, they couldn't get enough. Often they want to borrow something from the classroom to take home and share with their family. I have even seen them extend beyond the games to create their own games. They also enjoy role playing and sharing books they have read and stories they have written. They equally enjoy being the audience. For many of my students the classroom is the only place they will be exposed to experiences that help them develop social capital and open up all the possibilities the world has to offer them.
