Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Please help my students learn that other states love books so much they make lists of them. My students know that Florida loves books and has recommended lists for students from Kindergarten to 12th grade. I hope reading books from the WA and VA lists help them connect with the world around them.

My students learn about themselves and their world while reading good books.

Sadly, some students do not have personally owned books and only have access to the variety of books from our school. I want to help them connect to the world through books; not just books about other places, but with books recommended by other places. Student mobility is fairly significant at my school and when we know ahead of time, I always tell them the name of their new librarian and that the librarian is my friend. I try to encourage the student to go to the library as soon as possible in hopes that they will feel a little more confident and connected. When we are having lessons using books from state award lists, it is an opportunity to reinforce the idea that books are of value. The lessons result in wonderful learning opportunities. This year the primary students loved showing me how they "weep bitterly" which was a phrase from a book this year. The older students love to prepare for a "Battle of the Books".

My Project

On many occasions, students are able to connect with books. I anticipate many debates with students over which list has the better books. I also expect that we will vote for favorites from each list as well as overall. I like to share with the students books that are from list K-12 and point out that reading for pleasure never goes away. Each year student seem shocked that I read those books too. I love to use them for lessons on vocabulary, phrases, text connections and explaining genre. Our favorite phrase this year with the primary grades was "wept bitterly" and we all had a great time practicing it. We also had a wonderful time with the word,"waft". Using books recommended in other states will help students see that no matter where you are, some things are constant. I would also like to find a sister library to share student observations. Having a book in common will be an easy way to introduce the lists at both the primary and intermediate levels.

Using books to help students see the world as an interconnected place will allow them to explore with ease.

We will be able to use map skills along with the literacy skills we already practice. I am excited about the idea of introducing students to a new way to look at books. I hope they will see that books can be the constant in an ever changing world.
