Weight! How Much Mass Does It Have?

My students need 6 scales. My 7th and 8th grade students are budding scientists. They need instruments that will enable them to make precise measurements of objects.

My Students

Do you remember how much fun the first time you found the volume of something using water displacement? You put it on a balance and found the mass. Yikes! We don't have scales. Help my students learn about density by taking their own measurements.

My students are smart, curious, challenging 7th and 8th grade students.

My students, especially my pre-teen and young teen boys love science. They want to know how the natural world works. Our school is an urban school and our student body is 99% African-American and high poverty.

My Project

My students are 21st Century learners. My students should learn about density by finding the mass and volume of an object. We can't find the mass of an object without a scale. I want them to understand density by doing the work and not by memorizing a formula. The National Academy of Sciences describes a good science classroom beautifully, "...all students have some appreciation of the beauty and wonder of science; possess sufficient knowledge of science and engineering to engage in public discussions on related issues; are careful consumers of scientific and technological information related to their everyday lives; are able to continue to learn about science outside school; and have the skills to enter careers of their choice..." My students live in a high poverty environment, but they need to have a rich, inquiry based science classroom.

Science is my students' future.

Good science develops habits of mind and thinking that will benefit my students in all areas of academic learning (and life). Help keep my students in the lab, generating questions, developing hypothesis, creating controlled experiments, collecting data, and sharing their findings. Who knows. The next great scientist might just be sitting at one of my lab tables.
