My Students

I'll admit it. I don't get excited about talking about the weather. I need help to get my students interested and excited about learning about weather. We do not have basic tools like barometers and hygrometers that are needed to to give students hands on experience and understanding.

My students are curious, bright, wonderful children who live in a high poverty, urban area and lack the resources that can help them to learn more.

We live in Florida which (fortunately) has fair and mild weather most of the year but (unfortunately) does not have weather that is interesting to children learning about weather. I teach science to students in grades Kindergarten through 5. The focus on weather is in grades 2 and 5.

My Project

I am requesting weather watching tools such as barometers and hydrometers. My students read about these tools and see pictures in their science books, but never really understand what they are or how to use them. I want them to be able to record air pressure using a barometer and notice for themselves that rising air pressure brings fair weather and falling air pressure brings rain. I want them to see first hand how they measure wind speed. First hand experience is a million times more meaningful than pictures in a book. I am also requesting charts to record and display weather data and let the little meteorologists do their own weather reports. I am requesting a book that has directions for students to build their own weather stations and some games to reinforce what they learn about weather.

Weather is a science topic that must be learned and the one that our students are scoring the lowest in.

I need a way to inspire myself and my students to want to learn about weather. I need ways to make this topic fun and interesting. These materials will help me to do that.
