Who needs math games when a world of meaningful real-life fun is beckoning? My students need the opportunity to have authentic experiences related to science and math.
My students are a creative, inquisitive group of second grade students.
Many of my students receive free or reduced lunch. Several of the students in my class speak Spanish and English. They are excited to learn but many have few experiences outside of school. They need to have opportunities to see how math and science relates to real life.
My Project
Monitoring real-time changes in the weather, along with collecting and analyzing the data itself, is fascinating to children. My students will be able to work in cooperative groups to create a working weather station that they use to collect data during the year. This will enable students the opportunity to gather information, create meaningful graphs, and promote oral language skills as they each get a turn to be the daily meteorologist. With this equipment students will be able to collect actual weather information and then compare it to newspapers or online sources. They will be able to draw conclusions and make predictions according to their gathered information.
Applying math and science to real life applications is invaluable in young students.
Students that understand that math and science has benefits outside of school are more engaged. Using authentic data sources, such as weather patterns students can investigate their own math-related questions, and analyze past and current data to make inferences and predictions.
