We Need Materials To Learn To Write Right!

My students need materials, like activity pockets, mini writing lessons, writing prompts and paper, to build writing skills; students with delays need step by step prompts to get their thoughts on paper.

My Students

Writing is an extremely hard process for many children with disabilities. There are many steps between a thought and writing it on paper. Often students have been very unsuccessful in writing activities. These materials will guide my students through the process of writing.

I teach special needs students in first through fifth grade in a rural district in SC.

Eight out of ten students are from single parent economically disadvantaged homes. My students are generally two to three years delayed in reading and writing skills. They are labeled "not ready yet" when they begin school. It is my job to remediate and close the learning gaps between my students and their same age peers. Typically these children have not been read to before school and therefore have reading and language delays. With these delays, writing is a challenge. Most students have not seen writing in the home or have had any kind of writing experiences. These writing prompts are needed to guide the student step by step in the writing process. The prompts also give the students ideas on what to write about. This material will prepare students for the state writing test. The materials are bright and the prompts are fun and engaging. They will be a great tool in writing centers.

My Project

Students must learn to be efficient in writing skills. Writing encompasses many skills. Students must learn to choose an idea, brainstorm the idea, organize, rewrite, edit and then write a final copy. Often students give up before they get started. These brightly colored prompts will engage students during each step of the writing process. Because these materials are grade leveled, without the student knowing, students can start the process on their functional level and build skills until they reach grade level. Students will learn what is expected to pass the writing prompt when working with "Meeting Writing Standards" materials.

Students must be efficient writers to progress in school.

Writing is a lifelong skill. With these materials my children will learn to write their thoughts on paper and take command of written communication. Thank you in advance for reading and considering funding this essential project. Remember, we are a TEAM...Together Everyone Achieves More.
