We Need Bully!

My students need to see the movie Bully! to help them grow compassion and treat each other with kindness.

My Students

I've heard a boy call a girl "fat and sloppy" to her face. I've mediated arguments that started with insults like "fruitcup" or "ratched." Name calling and ridicule rule the halls of middle schools, have left scars on those of us lucky enough to make it to high school, and spare no one.

My students are spunky 7th and 8th graders who are learning their life lessons in a challenging, urban city in Indiana.

Insults, slurs, and homophobic jargon are part of the gritty language spoken in homes and on the streets of our city. Like all middle schoolers, our students' allegiances to their friends are unbreakable. The divisions between groups and those perceived as "in" and "out" are painfully visible. Name calling, teasing, harassment, and physical intimidation are common techniques used to keep everyone in their pecking order. While the term "bullying" generates loud sighs and we've-heard-this-before eye rolls, our students certainly suffer from it's epidemic and nothing we've done to intervene has lessened its power. With girls eating their lunches while hiding in bathroom stalls or boys who hide tear filled eyes while refusing to admit what may have happened on the bus---we are in desperate need of an impactful intervention.

My Project

The movie Bully! captures some of the darkest moments of peer bullying and ridicule and slaps them on the big screen. While sitting in the anonymous dark of a movie theater, my students could follow the paths that bullies and victims take, seeing all too familiar patterns and consequences. The opportunity to see this film will open the doors to conversations about an epidemic that needs to stopped, both in our hallways and world wide. The funding of this grant would allow us to take all of our 7th and 8th graders to see the movie Bully! After a weekend of processing the messages of the film, students will return to school on Monday to discuss the images and ideas of the film. The final four weeks of the school year will be spent team building, continuing discussions around bullying, and laying down foundations for next year to erode the sources of bullying and help all students feel safe.

The girls hiding in the bathroom during lunch deserve the dignity and safety of eating in the cafeteria.

No student should have to choose between staying home from school or battling the whims social terrorists on the back of a school bus. Our students need to experience the movie Bully! to bring real time change into our school and community.
