This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Remember how much fun you had with that chemistry set that you got for Christmas one year? I know I remember it well. I would like for my students to have a similar experience by using these water testing kits to find pH, DO, and turbidity of water sources within the Chesapeake Bay Watershed.

I teach 6th grade science to seventy-five 6th graders at a Title I school.

We have a large English as a Second Language population. Our students perform well on standardized tests due in part to many hand-on, engaging learning experiences. This will be a beginning activity on a year long environmental science focus which will end with the children creating a vegetable garden.

My Project

Our students will collect water samples from a stream, a pond, a river, and of course the school water fountain. For each sample students will record the temperature, find the turbidity, test the pH levels, and determine the dissolved oxygen. They will analyze the results and determine the water health of these sources. This is one way I will teach them the importance of taking care of our watershed and its water sources.

It is my goal that my students will become avid defenders of our environment.

Through hand-on experiences like this, they will discover they joy of being good stewards of our environment.
