Watch My Biology Class Create a World of Projects

My students need a wide variety of art supplies in order to create fabulous class projects. They need to use crafts items such as pom poms, craft sticks, buttons, and wooden shapes to build models. They need markers and colored pencils (and a sharpener) and glue to create the projects and posters in class that will enhance the activities for them. And they need spiral notebooks to keep an interactive notebook of all of the collected work and to help with organizational skills.

I teach Biology at the high school level. My students are "regular" by definition but certainly not typical. I teach at a FOCUS school, which means that the majority of my students are from low-income homes, often single or no-parent homes and from the poor part of town. They often don't have the money for supplies or even lunch.

I can see the look in my students eyes that they are creative. I can tell by the clothes they wear and the lack of supplies that they are poor and don't have the money for many things. I want my students to get the chance to show me that they can create projects if given the opportunity and the supplies. I cannot give them all they need by myself though!

If I could have a variety of supplies to keep in my classroom and that my students could use each day to create projects and complete activities, then I think they could learn so much more. I need for them to have craft supplies such as pom poms, craft sticks, wooden figures, buttons and craft shapes in order to create models of important biology structures. I need for my students to all be able to have colored pencils (and a sharpener!), markers and glue to complete other activities in the classroom. They wouldn't be embarrassed about not having they supplies at home to complete their work. They could get the chance to succeed and be proud of their work. I need for each child to have a spiral notebook so that they can make an "interactive notebook" of their work and to help with organizational skills. All of these supplies will help my kids succeed!

You can make it possible for my students to own their education and to be a part of their learning experiences. You can help them discover their creativity and maybe give them a push in the right direction. For many of my students, success is hard to come by and college is not even an option. However, if my students gained a love of science through creative activities, then maybe that can all change!
