My students need two crepe makers, a crepe kit, and spatulas.

In our French class, we do a variety of activities involving writing, listening, speaking, reading, and some cultural knowledge. I would like to provide more hands-on activities to differentiate from the normal tasks. Cooking food provides that opportunity, and students always love food!
Students are between fifteen and eighteen years old (sophomores, juniors, and seniors).
The class is not divided by levels so each class contains a variety of ability levels. Students are required to take either one, two (recommended), or three years of a language course (depends on career/college plans). Many students participate in some form of after-school activity. Like average teenagers, most are interested in the latest music, fashion, food, and social activities in and outside of the school setting. It is a medium-sized high school located in a small town with a large population of residents with low annual incomes.
The crepe maker, spatula, and batter kit will be used to prepare crepes in our classroom on special occasions, holidays, and during the food unit which introduces crepes (many have never heard of them before). Instead of looking at crepes in a book or watching them being made on an educational video, students can experience making and tasting them for themselves. Crepes are a staple in French culture, thus students will gain cultural knowledge and will be more likely to retain this knowledge through a hands-on experience. For school and cultural fairs or orientations and similar events, students can make crepes with these makers to represent the school's language department.
With your donations, we will be able to bring one of the most enjoyable and important aspects of a culture, food, to life in our very own classroom.
When students see crepes in restaurants and grocery stores, on TV, or even in their own homes they will think about the French culture and it's influence on food (and many other areas of life). I expect these products to create an interest and deeper appreciation of foreign cuisine that will leave students more respectful of world cultures.
