My Students

Double time! Our kids are struggling to keep up with academic rigor while learning two languages.

My students attend a Hawaiian Immersion School that serves kids from Kindergarten up to 12th Grade.

In the Middle School they first experience classes taught in English. So in 5th grade division was Puʻunaue and multiplication was hoʻomāhua. Now in 6th grade they not only learn Pre-Algebra, they learn the English terms as well. They face extra challenges as they adapt to their new classrooms but the cultural foundation gives them great inner strength and aloha and helps them persevere. Blending the traditional with the modern can be difficult at times but is really very rewarding. Saving human cultural diversity seems a lot like saving the diversity of the rainforest - a very worthwhile endeavor.

My Project

These kids value their traditional heritage even though they've had to work extra hard learning two languages while keeping up with today's increasing academic demands. They eagerly accept technology and the educational apps available on E Readers will help them keep up in their Math classes.

Technology is very limited in our school.

Laptop use is generally limited to project work in other classes. The new educational apps have proven a great tool used in other larger schools as a means to help kids strengthen their Math Skills. They are also a wonderful motivational tool. Please help our kids by giving us a much needed technology boost.
