My students are primarily visual and kinesthetic learners. They responded extremely well to the Algebra Tiles we purchased last year. This year as the curriculum becomes increasingly abstract I would love to include more Math manipulatives. As many of our students are ADHD as well, a computer software program would be so beneficial; these students excel at engaging in programs that offer compartmentalized units. And, like most youths, they are computer literate and enjoy very much working with technology. An additional challenge my students face is that their Elementary School curriculum was taught in Hawaiian. When they begin 6th grade they continue their studies in the Hawaiian Language but their core classes are in English. This makes non-fiction reading especially challenging for them. I have found that whatever I can do to make the Math text come alive through graphics and manipulatives meets with great success. I love it when my students say, "Oooh, now I understand."
