Urgent! We Need Books For Summer

My students need a variety of books that they can take home to keep and read!

Mrs. Stanton Oak Grove Elementary School
Bloomington, MN Grades PreK-2

My Students

Read! Read! Read! That is what we love in first grade! During the school year students check out books from our classroom library and our school library. What happens when summer comes, however, and many kids don't have adequate reading material at home? This proposal will solve that problem!

My students are smart.

My students are creative. My students are excited to learn to read! I have abilities in my classroom ranging from Special Needs to High Ability. Some come from homes where English is not spoken. They come from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds. They all are become great readers and they love books!

My Project

I am requesting a variety of books that include chapter books and books at a beginning 2nd grade level. These books are going to be saved until the end of the school year. At that time, my students will be able to choose books that they can take home and keep at home to read over summer break. I plan to also make available some books that I have purchased at garage sales, and hopefully some books that families might donate if they are done with them. Together, this will make many books available to kids over the summer. I am going to give families the option to keep the book, or, if they feel they are finished with the book in the fall, they can return it to me. At that time I will collect any returned books for next years students the following summer. I hope to keep this going from year to year, adding more books as I get them. This will get students reading every summer! If the project is not funded by then, they will go home with kids next fall!

Research has found that students tend to lose some of their reading skill over the summer months.

I want to change this! Providing reading material for the kids over the summer is the first step. This proposal will also benefit younger siblings who will also have access to the books. Thank you for considering our proposal!
