I teach a Special Day Class for students with language and social impairments, particularly Autism and Communication Disorders. My classroom is one with fifteen sweet fourth and fifth graders with incredible curiosity about their world. Often Social Studies is an area that seems very abstract to my students because it requires them to think of the world outside of their own immediate surrounds. Frequently, it seems as though students with special needs are given the short end of the stick in education. They are often confined to the last portable behind the bleachers, hidden out of sight with little interaction with the rest of the school population. The mission my school upholds is not only to teach these students the CA state standards, but also to give them the confidence that they need to live on their own in the world. Sadly, despite every attempt by my school to provide an excellent education for all students (special education and general education), some subjects tend to fall behind math and reading in importance. Science and Social Studies are frequently put on the back burner as we prepare for state tests and benchmark exams. A large part of becoming an active citizen is understanding the world around you. Because I know I have a very limited time to teach Social Studies, I want to ensure that the time spent on it is valuable and memorable to my students. For my project I will need book libraries that are at an appropriate reading level for my students. With this we can provide enriching material for them to access independently. Also, we need molds for them to make models of world maps and U.S. maps. Finally, we need a subscription to Time for Kids to help ensure that they are engaged in current events. In our society, it is imperative that citizens be independent and involved. A democracy functions as the population is involved and my students need to build a foundational understanding of their world in order to become interested enough to pursue current events independently. With this proposal you will help enrich the education these students receive so that they may become independent and conscientious citizens as adults.
