Travel Around the World on a Magical Story Time Carpet

My students need an inviting carpet to provide comfortable seating for story time, discussion groups, math activities, games, and independent or partner reading.

My Students

Have you had the opportunity, whether for business or pleasure, to visit other states or even some foreign countries? If so, you are very fortunate! Many of my students have never even been outside their own neighborhood. Their knowledge of world geography is very minimal.

I teach second grade in an urban, public elementary school in North Carolina.

My students are mostly African-American and Hispanic. All are economically disadvantaged; however, they come to school every day eager to learn. They really enjoy listening to me read stories aloud to them! Some of my students have never crawled into a parent's lap to hear a story read aloud; and consequently they enter school already well behind their peers from literacy-rich homes. Approximately one- third of my students come to school from a home where Spanish, or another foreign language, is the only language spoken because at least one parent does not speak any English. This lack of exposure to English at home makes it so much more difficult for them to learn at school. I make it a priority to always carve out time in our busy, daily schedule to read aloud a variety of books: colorful picture books, funny chapter books, nonfiction science and social studies books, etc.

My Project

With this large, eye-catching, colorful world carpet I will be able to gather my students together comfortably at my feet for story time. Now when I want to show them the various story settings, all we need to do is look at the carpet. We will be able to find their home countries and trace the path immigrants took as they journeyed to America. This carpet has an accurate world map with the seven continents and the oceans all represented. It also comes with a guide full of activity suggestions. This carpet will fill two needs for my students: familiarizing them with world geography, and providing them with optimal seating for story time.

By funding this project you will allow my students to hear the rich text of quality children's literature while viewing the pictures up close.

Research shows that by the time students enter third grade, if they are reading below grade most of them give up. As their second grade teacher, I must do everything in my power to instill in them a life-long love of reading. Reading aloud to them is a powerful way of promoting that love of text.
