Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Has the heat ever affected your health? Well, how about learning? It's impossible in the warm/hot months for students to be able to focus and learn in a classroom where temperatures exceed 90 degrees Fahrenheit.
My students are in a high-poverty, low socioeconomic area.
Their school building is 3 stories tall with no air conditioning anywhere, except in the main office and principal's office.
There is never any money in the budget to provide these kids with fundamental needs, especially an air conditioner.
We forget that learning can't happen when they are falling asleep or passing out because of the heat.
My Project
With an air conditioner (something even I take for granted), will make a world of difference in the early Fall and Spring/Summer months.
Just walking into the room, the kids would feel relief and be more eager to learn and do. We expect these poor kids to perform to the best of their abilities, but even the teachers can't be at their best in such ridiculous heat. If the teacher struggles, so how can we expect them to be at their best?
The learning environment should be ideal.
It should not impede or negatively impact their learning. Heat, for one, should not be so overwhelming that the students can't even focus. A simple portable AC unit would tremendously alter their ability to learn and focus during those hot months so that the students could truly be at their best.
